Things to See and Do In and Around Brandon

Several visitors have asked for some tips on things to see and do if they won’t be attending the meetings and business sessions at National Kinvention 2015. Here are some ideas:

Souris is a town about half an hour south of Brandon and has a cool swinging bridge, a bird sanctuary, and a Rock Shop.

Near Carberry is the Sandhills Prov. Park where you can walk the sand dunes. It’s also home to the nearby Sandhills Casino.

About an hour north of Brandon is beautiful Riding Mountain National Park. Clear Lake has unique shops, great restaurants, a marina, paddle boats and kayaks for rent and a boat tour on the Martese. You can check some of these out at www.theclearlakemarina.com.

For those who are interested in the military, CFB Shilo is about 20 mins east of Brandon and features the Royal Canadian Artillery Museum. My son can spend hours in there. Please check out www.rcamuseum.com for hours of operation. Also the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum is at Brandon Municipal Airport, featuring exhibits on WWII pilot training and flight operations.

Locally, Brandon has the Brandon General Museum and Archives Unit 101, 19 9th St, which features a special Kin exhibit this summer, celebrating the 2015 National Kinvention and the 90th anniversary of Kin in Brandon. Give them a call 204-717-1514 for hours of operation.

Also in Brandon, Daly House Museum, several golf courses, mini golf and rock climbing at Albert’s Bistro, shopping at the Corral Center and Shoppers Mall, movies at Landmark Cinema, 5 pin and 10 pin bowling at Thunderbird Bowl, the Arabian Horse Show is in town at The Keystone Centre, and there are great shops and restaurants downtown (The Dock, The cinnamon Tree, Ten Thousand Villages, the Art Gallery Of Southwestern Manitoba, The Wildflower Cafe and if you are looking for finer dining, Remington’s is the restaurant to go to).

A new restaurant opened up across the street from the Victoria Inn (Kinvention Hotel). It’s called The Chilli Chutney where Indian cuisine is created with love and skill.

Also across the street is the best fried chicken in town at the 7-11. Seriously, it’s great chicken and on sale Friday nights!

Also across the street is Fun Time Pottery where you can paint your own piece and they will fire it in the kiln for you.
